When days get shorter, many hens naturally begin replacing their old feathers with new ones.

They can look rough. Egg production can slow. And for a while, your beautiful fluffy girls can look like they’ve been through a fight.

That part can be completely normal.

But fall also means your flock is dealing with several things at once.

They’re growing new feathers. Their laying patterns are changing. Temperatures are dropping. They’re spending more time around the coop. And you still need to stay on top of parasites, nutrition and digestive health.

That’s why I tell chicken keepers to watch the whole bird, not just the feathers.

Pay attention to:

Their appetite

Are they eating normally?

Their droppings
Have you noticed a persistent change?

Their behavior
Are they active and behaving normally?

Their body condition
Are they maintaining weight?

Their skin & feathers
Does it look like normal molt or irritation and excessive feather loss?

Their coop
Are there signs of mites, lice or other unwanted visitors?

If something seems seriously wrong, talk to your veterinarian.

But if your girls are otherwise healthy and going through the normal stresses of the season, this is when good everyday nutrition and digestive support really matter.
