The Molt Is Over. For Your Hens, the Hardest Part of the Year Is Just Starting.
30/10/2026, By Dr. Valerie Henley, Licensed Poultry Veterinarian
Regrowing a full coat of feathers drains a hen, and she goes into the cold running low. Most keepers miss it because the new feathers look fine. Here's what she's short on, and the 30-second daily habit that goes in her water.

"She's done molting, so she'll be fine for winter, right?" - Not necessarily. New feathers don't mean she's back to full strength.
Why She Still Looks Worn Out After the Molt
Feathers are almost pure protein. Regrowing a full coat uses up the reserves she'd normally carry into winter.
And the timing is bad. Days are shorter, there's nothing green left to forage, and the cold puts extra strain on her.
So she starts winter running on less, even if her new feathers look perfect.
A warm coop and extra treats help her comfort, not her reserves. Those come back from steady nutrition she can absorb, day after day, through the coldest weeks.
The weeks right after the molt decide how she gets through winter.
Most keepers reach for one of these first:
A heat lamp: warms the coop, but puts nothing back into her
Pricier feed: only helps if her gut is absorbing what's in it
Extra scratch and treats: fills her up, but it's mostly carbs
Waiting it out: fine for a healthy hen, slow for a run-down one
Kitchen remedies in the water: mixed by eye, so you never know how much she's getting
None of them gets a measured dose of nutrition into the one thing she drinks every day: her water.
What Goes in Her Water
Roosty's Immunity & Digestion Booster is a concentrated liquid that goes straight into her drinking water. You don't change her feed.

What's in it:
Omega-3 (flaxseed oil), oregano oil, turmeric and vitamins D3 and E. Made in the USA.
Together they support her immune system and digestion while she recovers from the molt, and the omega-3 helps with egg quality.

How to use it
Shake the bottle and add 1 capful (1oz, or 2 tablespoons) to every 2 gallons of drinking water
Do it every day, and keep eating the eggs as normal
One bottle lasts a month for up to 10 hens. Add a bottle for every 10 more
Keep her drinking through the cold
Hens drink less when the water's cold, and stop once it freezes. A heated base or a fresh refill morning and evening keeps her drinking, and keeps the dose going in. Roosty's sold out of Immunity Booster last winter, so order before the cold sets in.
