How to properly deworm your chickens
Written by Jennie Salandra
Alright y’all, let’s talk worms. (EW) If you are one of the few that has been blessed to never see this in your flock, you are LUCKY.
As you know, raising chickens, whether on a small homestead like me or a larger farm, it comes with its share of responsibilities. Among the essential tasks for keeping your flock healthy, preventive deworming stands out as a critical yet often overlooked. Most folks, even like me in the beginning, do not even think too preventively treat for worms. But why is preventive deworming so beneficial, and what can it do for your chickens? Let me explain!
First, you may ask what it even is! Preventive deworming involves administering medication to your chickens at regular intervals to control and eliminate internal parasites, particularly worms. These parasites can include roundworms, tapeworms, and cecal worms, among others. While some chicken keepers prefer to treat worms only when symptoms appear, preventive deworming aims to stop the problem before it starts. Instead of using the traditional medicine, I personally opt for Roosty’s Deworming Chili Mix. There are a few reasons I choose them over the standard feed store paste, but one of the main reasons is it’s ORGANIC & natural. I don’t want to be pumping my birds with medicines I don’t understand or know where they are made. Primarily because our chickens provide food for our family via eggs, so organic and natural feels way better to me. And with Roosty’s, it’s as simple as just sprinkling it on their feed!
Second, the harmful effects if your flock gets worms is a DOOZY. Worm infestations can drain your chickens of essential nutrients, leading to weight loss, reduced egg production, and a general decline in health. Worms can multiply quickly, especially in environments where chickens are in close quarters or have access to the same foraging areas repeatedly. A severe infestation can lead to serious health problems, including internal damage and even death. Preventive deworming keeps worm populations under control, reducing the risk of a full-blown outbreak that could devastate your flock.
See why I didn’t want to talk about it? I don’t even want to mutter the words WORMS into existence, I have knocked on WOOD.
But here’s the cool thing, especially using Roosty’s Chili Mix. By deworming regularly, you help ensure that your flock remains in PEAK condition, with strong immune systems, healthy appetites, and the energy they need to thrive. Healthy chickens lay better eggs. Worm infestations can interfere with a hen’s ability to absorb nutrients, which can, in turn, affect egg quality and production.
Plus, it’s going to SAVE YOU MONEY (and time, but in our economy MONEY) because treating a severe worm infestation or dealing with a sick flock can be time-consuming and expensive. So spending money on prevention saves you big time money in the end!
So in conclusion, DO IT. Haha, your birds with thank you & so will your mind. I have peace of mind using Roosty’s because I know it is good for them, and good for their health long term.
Your chickens—and your future self—will thank you!
